The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) invites travellers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to immerse themselves in the timeless charm of Germany’s festive markets. From medieval towns illuminated by candlelight to cosmopolitan cities filled with music and art, the 2025 festive season offers a journey through centuries of heritage, craftsmanship, and celebration.

As one of Germany’s most cherished traditions, the Weihnachtsmarkt or festive market captures the essence of the country’s cultural identity. Each market combines history and creativity, offering visitors from the GCC an opportunity to experience German hospitality at its warmest. Whether seeking a romantic winter escape, a family adventure, or a cultural journey, travellers can enjoy an atmosphere where heritage meets modern holiday magic.

A Festive Journey Through Germany

A Festive Journey Through Germany

Germany’s winter calendar stretches from the storybook towns of Bavaria to the lively neighbourhoods of Hamburg, each destination offering its own distinctive celebration of the festive season.

In Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the Reiterlesmarkt (21 November–23 December 2025) transforms cobblestone streets into a scene from a fairy tale, with nightly “Advent windows” opening to reveal illuminated displays. To the east, Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, the country’s oldest festive market dating back to 1434, welcomes visitors with its grand wooden Christmas pyramid, traditional woodcrafts, and the world-famous Stollenfest celebrating Dresden’s signature fruitcake.

Further south, the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt (28 November–24 December) fills Hauptmarkt Square with the aroma of spiced nuts, roasted almonds, and gingerbread. Families can enjoy the dedicated children’s market nearby, while in Leipzig, the festive market (25 November–23 December) blends over 500 years of history with attractions such as a Finnish village, a fairy forest, and a Ferris wheel overlooking Augustusplatz.

For those seeking a more intimate alpine escape, the Ravenna Gorge Market in the Black Forest (28 November–21 December, weekends only) offers a truly atmospheric setting beneath a 40-metre viaduct, surrounded by forested slopes and glowing lanterns.

City Lights and Seasonal Splendor

Germany’s cosmopolitan cities offer a contemporary twist to this cherished tradition, blending modern design with festive charm.

In Berlin, the WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt (24 November–31 December) transforms one of the capital’s most iconic squares into a winter village filled with artisanal workshops, gourmet delicacies, and live performances. Munich’s Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz (24 November–24 December) showcases Bavarian tradition under a 25-metre illuminated tree, alongside the famous Kripperlmarkt, Germany’s largest nativity market.

In Cologne, the Cathedral Festive Market (17 November–23 December) glows beneath a canopy of starlights and one of Germany’s tallest Christmas trees. The market is renowned for its sustainability initiatives, featuring locally sourced gifts and energy-efficient displays. Hamburg’s Historic Festive Market (24 November–23 December) brings maritime spirit to the city, with the “Flying Santa” sleigh soaring above the Rathausmarkt to delight families daily.

Completing the line-up, Stuttgart’s Festive Market (26 November–23 December) is among Europe’s largest, spanning Schlossplatz and Schillerplatz with 300 elaborately decorated stalls, a children’s fairyland, and a competition for the most beautifully designed rooftop display.

Whether exploring markets with children, sharing festive treats with loved ones, or taking part in cultural performances, Germany’s festive season offers memorable moments for every family.
