STARZPLAY, the leading subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service in the MENA region, is set to exclusively premiere the highly anticipated 2025 thriller series, “Kabul”, on August 14th.
By the creators of “Class Act” (2023), Olivier Demangel and Thomas Finkielkraut, “Kabul” is a six-episode, gripping story of the city’s fall at the hands of the Taliban before the pledged Western withdrawal from Afghanistan is complete. As the Americans and their NATO allies prepare to depart by 31 August 2021, the offensive begins to make steady advances towards Kabul on the 15th. Faced with this sudden change of plans, American, French, Italian, and German diplomats must improvise the evacuation of hundreds of Afghans and refugees to the airport alongside the police before it is too late. Meanwhile, the resident Afghan Nazany family – a direct target of the Taliban – faces its own challenges in trying to escape, as its members respond to the crisis in different ways. Jonathan Zaccaï commands the screen as he plays Gilles, head of security at the French embassy in Kabul, who never takes “no” for an answer while negotiating safe passage for Paris-bound Afghan refugees. Under his wing, Zahara of the Nazany family, played by Darina Al Joundi, finds herself grappling to choose between escaping the Taliban’s hit list and keeping her family together. Decked with a diverse cast, Kabul also features renowned actors such as Vassilis Koukalani, Hannah Abdoh, and Gianmarco Saurino, capturing the subtle, personal toll of instability. Streaming exclusively on STARZPLAY in MENA, the complete six-episode box-set launches on August 14, 2025, with all episodes available from day one.
