What Men Should Actually Be Wearing In The Heat & The Humidity

  • Which Fabrics Are Best for Men Living in the Gulf?

You can spend thousands on tailoring, invest in the latest trainers, or finally find the perfect linen shirt, but if you're wearing the wrong fabrics underneath, none of it really matters. Most men living in the Middle East know the feeling. You leave the house looking put together, walk from the car to the office, and within minutes you're already feeling warmer than you'd like. By lunchtime, your shirt feels heavier, your clothes sit differently, and you find yourself counting down until you can get home and change. We tend to blame the weather, but often the problem starts with the layer closest to our skin.

The Best Fabrics for Men Dressing in the Gulf Heat

The Best Fabrics for Men Dressing in the Gulf Heat

Living in the Gulf means dressing for two climates at once. Outside, temperatures regularly climb above 40°C. Inside, offices, restaurants and shopping malls are heavily air conditioned. Your wardrobe needs to cope with constant swings in temperature, movement and humidity, yet most men still buy clothes based on colour, fit or brand before considering the one thing they'll actually feel all day long, the fabric. Not all materials perform the same, particularly in extreme heat.

Polyester, nylon and heavily synthetic blends dominate the market because they're affordable, durable and easy to manufacture. They also tend to trap heat and hold moisture close to the body, creating exactly the environment that makes long summer days feel even longer. That's fine if you're spending the day in a gym. Less so if you're moving between client meetings, travelling for work or standing outside waiting for a taxi in August.

Natural and regenerated fibres tell a different story. Bamboo remains one of the most underrated fabrics for everyday dressing. Lightweight, breathable and naturally antibacterial, it allows air to circulate while helping move moisture away from the skin. Research has shown that bamboo viscose blends can offer lower thermal resistance than comparable cotton fabrics, making them particularly well suited to hotter climates.

Modal is another material worth paying attention to. Produced from beech wood, it combines softness with excellent breathability while retaining its shape over repeated washing. That's particularly valuable in the GCC, where clothes are washed more frequently simply because they're worn in hotter conditions. TENCEL™ Lyocell offers similar benefits, balancing moisture management with temperature regulation, making it an excellent choice for shirts, T-shirts and everyday essentials. Linen continues to earn its reputation for good reason. It dries quickly, allows heat to escape easily and becomes softer over time, making it one of the smartest investments for summer dressing. Fine merino wool is another fabric many men overlook. Despite the name, lightweight merino actively regulates body temperature, making it surprisingly comfortable even during warmer months.

The easiest place to start, however, isn't your shirt. It's your underwear. The layer closest to your skin influences everything worn on top. If that base layer traps heat, retains moisture or loses its shape throughout the day, every other piece in your outfit works harder than it needs to. Increasingly, brands such as Rawform are focusing on plant-based fibres like bamboo and Lenzing™ Modal to create breathable everyday essentials built specifically for warmer climates. It's a subtle upgrade, but one that often makes the biggest difference.

Beyond innerwear, more brands are beginning to embrace climate-conscious materials across their collections. Homegrown names such as Thaely create sneakers crafted entirely from upcycled plastic bags and recycled rubber soles, while Dubai-based menswear retailer LMTD|DXB champions linen-led resort wear designed with the Gulf climate in mind. It reflects a broader shift in how men are approaching their wardrobes. Less impulse buying, fewer trend-driven purchases, and greater attention to quality, longevity and how clothes actually perform.

Ultimately, dressing well in the Middle East is about shopping smarter. The next time you're updating your wardrobe, don't just ask whether something looks good on the hanger. Instead, take the time to think about how it will feel after eight hours, two meetings, a walk across the car park and one very hot afternoon. Because in this part of the world, the right fabric is a luxury worth finding.
