VisitBritain is partnering with Warner Bros. Pictures to showcase the evocative English locations featured in Practical Magic 2, the new chapter of the beloved story which sees Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return to the big screen. The collaboration forms part of the international Starring GREAT Britain campaign, which encourages visitors to discover the locations across England that have starred in iconic film and television productions, turning a passion for screen stories into travel inspiration.
Practical Magic 2 returns audiences to the mysterious and enchanting world of the Owens sisters. When an ancient curse once again threatens the fate of their family, the sisters must face new challenges in a story that intertwines family bonds, tradition and ancestral magic. The film sees Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens and is directed by Susanne Bier.
Filmed partly at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire and across a number of English locations, the production makes full use of the extraordinary variety of landscapes and settings that England has to offer. More than half of the film’s shooting schedule took place on location, helping to create the rich visual world at the heart of the story.
Among the film’s most striking locations is Hambleden in Buckinghamshire, the picturesque village that becomes Thornfield on screen, with its historic buildings, cobbled streets and quintessential English charm. Also in Buckinghamshire, Wormsley Estate served as the setting for Tom’s cottage, while nearby Black Park Country Park provided the woodland scenery surrounding the village.
England’s rich heritage also plays an important role in shaping the film’s visual identity. The spectacular Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire was used as the setting for the ruins of an ancient manor house, while the eighteenth-century Langleybury Mansion in Hertfordshire provided locations for scenes set at Harvard and British accommodation. London’s late Victorian Bishopsgate Institute also appears in the film as a library.
Other filming locations include St. Mary and All Saints Church in Romford, transformed into a New England cemetery; the famous Royal Standard of England, which lays claim to more than nine centuries of history; and The Hamptons at Worcester Park in south London, chosen to represent the New England town where the Owens family lives. The Royal Chelsea Hospital was also used for scenes set in a flower market and for exterior shots standing in for Harvard.
Alongside its location filming, the production recreated one of the most iconic elements of the franchise at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden: the famous Owens family house. Built especially for the film, the new version of the house was designed to allow seamless filming between interior and exterior spaces while retaining the distinctive character that made the original so memorable.
Directed by Susanne Bier, Practical Magic 2 stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, Solly McLeod, Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing. The screenplay is written by Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel, based on The Book of Magic by Alice Hoffman.
Thanks to the extraordinary diversity of its locations, its rich historic heritage and its world-class creative and production infrastructure, England continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations for international film productions and an endless source of inspiration for screen-tourism enthusiasts.
