After years of meticulous restoration, the 17th-century St. Thomas Tower in Marsascala, Malta, has reopened its doors to visitors, transformed into a one-of-a-kind museum celebrating the nation’s rich maritime heritage and centuries-old relationship with the sea.
Standing proudly along Malta’s southern coast, the tower now welcomes travellers from around the world, including from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and wider Middle East, to explore a chapter of Mediterranean history where trade, exploration, and coastal defence converged in a shared story of human courage and cultural connection. Thanks to a €3.39 million EU co-funded project led by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) in collaboration with Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, this historic landmark has been reborn as a modern cultural attraction that fuses heritage with innovation. Through immersive storytelling, interactive exhibitions, and digital light projections, the museum offers visitors from the GCC and the wider region yet another reason to rediscover Malta, a destination that continually surprises with new experiences. Originally constructed in 1614 by the Knights of St. John to defend Malta’s shores from seaborne attacks, the tower has undergone extensive restoration including structural reinforcement, stone conservation, improved accessibility, and sustainable energy upgrades, all preparing it to welcome visitors from the GCC and beyond in a setting that beautifully blends authenticity, creativity, and a true sense of discovery. Adding a new dimension to Malta’s tourism offering for Middle East visitors, the St. Thomas Tower in Marsascala will soon be featured in regional travel industry packages designed for families and solo travellers seeking culturally rich and educational experiences.
