You've Found Your Challenge, Now Keep It Going: Expert Tips for Sustaining Fitness Habits Beyond Dubai Fitness Challenge

03 Dec 2025
  • How to keep fitness habits after DFC?
  • How to make DFC habits a daily lifestyle?

After committing to 30 minutes of daily activity throughout November, thousands of Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) participants have discovered activities they love, built new routines, and experienced the benefits of consistent movement. Now comes the crucial next step: keeping it going.

An initiative of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, DFC has always been about more than just 30 days. The Challenge serves as a catalyst for lasting change, helping people discover activities they enjoy and communities that motivate them – the foundations of sustainable fitness habits.

This year's 'Find Your Challenge' tagline empowered participants to explore diverse activities across four flagship events, three Fitness Villages, 30 Community Fitness Hubs, and thousands of free classes. For those who found their rhythm during the Challenge, fitness experts emphasise that the hardest part – getting started – is already done.

Scientific studies provide clear evidence on what works for maintaining exercise habits. Here are expert-recommended strategies to sustain the momentum.

Link exercise to existing daily routines

Rather than relying on specific times, tie workouts to daily events. Research published in Sports Medicine - Open shows that activities performed 'after breakfast' or 'before work' create stronger habits than those done at a consistent time of day, as event-based cues are more automatic than time-based reminders.

Maintain frequency during the critical first weeks

A study published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology demonstrates that exercising at least four times per week during the first six weeks after starting is crucial for establishing lasting habits. DFC participants have already completed 30 days – continuing with four or more weekly sessions helps cement that foundation.

Stay consistent with timing

Research published in Obesity found that 68% of successful exercisers maintained temporally consistent activity, and these individuals reported higher weekly frequency and duration. Those with consistent exercise timing were significantly more likely to meet recommended activity guidelines than those with inconsistent schedules.

Focus on activities genuinely enjoyed

A study in Scientific Reports confirms that physical exercise habits form through repeated satisfying experiences. Positive emotional responses to exercise strongly predict habit formation and long-term adherence – making the activities discovered during DFC the ones most likely to be sustained.

Leverage social connections

Research published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research demonstrates that social context, support from friends and family, and professional guidance are among the most significant factors affecting consistency. The run clubs, cycling groups, and fitness communities formed during November provide ongoing motivation and accountability.

Set specific goals

Research in PLOS One shows that individuals with higher exercise commitment who set clear personal goals demonstrate better adherence. Rather than vague aspirations, specific objectives – like cycling Al Qudra twice weekly or attending three yoga classes per week – create clear, achievable targets.

From Challenge to lifestyle

DFC 2025 demonstrated that 30 minutes of daily activity is achievable for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or fitness level. The habits formed, activities discovered, and communities found during the Challenge provide the foundation for a healthier, more active lifestyle – one that contributes to Dubai's vision of becoming one of the most active cities in the world.

The transition from structured Challenge to daily habit doesn't require dramatic changes. By maintaining the routines established in November, staying connected with fitness communities, and choosing activities genuinely enjoyed, participants can ensure their DFC journey continues long into 2026 and beyond.
