Organisers of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024, in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi and its inaugural Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial event, have announced that an Emirati artist has created a giant artwork at Turn 9 of Yas Marina Circuit.
Filling the entire run off area at Marsa Corner, the artwork by Emirati Latifa Saeed was inspired by the Sadu coding system – a traditional Bedouin weaving technique reimagined algorithmically.
Drawn by robots on the track, Latifa’s artwork symbolises the intersection of tradition and technology, much like Formula 1 itself – a blend of precision engineering and human creativity. The Sadu patterns also reflect the UAE’s heritage, representing desert life and Emirati values as well as the nation’s balance of tradition and progress in a dynamic, visual storytelling of speed, heritage, and technology.
“It is an honour and a privilege to showcase my artwork at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, My artwork is a tribute to the vibrant cultural legacy of the UAE and our leadership’s vision,” said Latifa Saeed.
The painting will be seen by an estimated TV audience of over 100 million people, as well as thousands of race goers expected at Yas Marina Circuit across the four-day Abu Dhabi Grand Prix race weekend.
Organised by the Department of Culture & Tourism - Abu Dhabi, the very first edition of Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial explored the evolving concept of public space in Abu Dhabi through the lens of four main factors: environment, community, urbanity, and indigeneity.
The Biennial investigates how environmental conditions influence gathering places and interactions, and how they define what is considered public space. The event promotes inclusivity and invites artists to contribute to a deeper understanding of public spaces and their cultural significance.
