  • How was Anna Karenina reinterpreted through contemporary dance and performance?

The iconic Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental hosted a remarkable one-night-only performance of the dance production “The Train Arrives In…”, inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s timeless novel Anna Karenina. The highly anticipated show brought together world-renowned ballet talent and delivered an unforgettable cultural experience to audiences in the capital.

The leading roles were performed by acclaimed dancer Vladislav Lantratov, Principal of the Bolshoi Theatre, alongside the exceptional Daria Pavlenko, former Principal Dancer of the Mariinsky Theatre and a former collaborator with the Pina Bausch Tanztheater.

Presented by the independent theatre company 2sisters theatre company, the production immersed audiences in the psychological depths of its protagonist, exploring Anna Karenina’s inner conflict and emotional fragmentation that ultimately led to her tragic fate. The performance focused on three central characters; Anna, her son Seryozha, and Vronsky; offering a distilled yet powerful narrative.

Directed by Irina Mikheeva, the production reinterpreted the classic story through contemporary dance, performance, and visual art. Speaking about the work, Mikheeva explained: “In this production, it was important for us to show not just the story of Anna Karenina, but her inner fracture — this agonizing back-and-forth journey between two worlds: the tender and vibrant world of Vronsky and the restrained, ‘porcelain’ world in which Seryozha remains. Neither becomes a home for her, and it is precisely in this contradiction that her tragedy is born. We deliberately moved away from literal interpretation; here, the body replaced words, and metaphorical images replaced scenery, allowing the audience to relive a familiar plot by passing it through themselves.”

Originally premiering in Moscow in 2025, the production quickly became a standout success on the capital’s theatre scene. Renowned critic Elena Fedorenko praised the performance, noting:

“With incredible plasticity in her flexible arms, Daria Pavlenko revealed a soul dreaming of flight. Her Anna was a heroine of special femininity; anxious and passionate; she was not afraid to move from the beautiful to the unflattering. Vladislav Lantratov was impeccably precise in conveying character; his Vronsky belonged to the breed of proud aristocrats. Every movement of the dancer was a soulful impulse; every pose a concentration of frozen expressiveness.”

The Abu Dhabi performance captivated audiences with its original scenography, which conveyed the protagonist’s unstable emotional state through striking visual metaphors. Combined with the extraordinary artistry of the lead performers, the production marked a significant highlight in the city’s cultural calendar.
