Video: Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 Reveals AI and the Future of Car Repair

03 Oct 2026
  • Can artificial intelligence replace mechanics and technicians inside garages?
  • How are new technologies making automotive repairs faster and more precise?
  • What does Automechanika reveal about the future of automotive parts?
  • Why should garage owners and automotive companies visit Automechanika Frankfurt?

In this Motor283 episode, we head to Germany for an inside look at Automechanika Frankfurt 2026, one of the most important exhibitions for automotive technology, repair, parts, workshops and future mobility. With around 4,400 exhibitors representing more than 80 countries, the show goes far beyond spare parts. From artificial intelligence inside workshops to cars that monitor the health of their drivers, automated painting, advanced glass repair and futuristic components, this is where the automotive industry shows what happens behind the scenes before new technology reaches our cars.

AI could completely change the automotive workshop

AI could completely change the automotive workshop

One of the biggest questions at Automechanika Frankfurt is how far AI can go inside the workshop. The exhibition demonstrates systems where artificial intelligence assists with painting, vehicle repair, lifting equipment and other workshop processes that traditionally depend heavily on human experience.

Rather than focusing only on whether AI will replace technicians, the technology shows how workshops could become faster, more precise and increasingly automated. For garage owners, repair specialists and automotive businesses, this is a glimpse at how everyday operations could look in the coming years.

The futuristic thinking continues inside the car itself. One university project demonstrates sensors integrated into the steering wheel and seatbelt that can monitor information such as body temperature and heart rate. The system could recognize a medical emergency, help the vehicle respond and potentially share important information with emergency services.

Some of the most practical innovations at the show focus on problems drivers face every day. One demonstration shows a method for repairing windshield damage without removing the entire glass panel. Resin, controlled temperature and vibration are used to fill the damaged area before polishing, with the demonstration suggesting that the process can be completed in roughly 15 minutes.

Paint technology is evolving just as quickly. Automated systems can monitor how much paint has been applied, identify areas that require more or less material and help create a more consistent finish. Robotics and AI are gradually taking over parts of a process that has traditionally required considerable human skill.

The restoration area takes precision in another direction. Classic vehicles, including a Volkswagen Beetle displayed with sections of its body opened up, reveal just how detailed restoration work can become when preserving historic cars.

Tires, batteries and components are becoming smarter

Tires, batteries and components are becoming smarter

The exhibition proves that familiar component manufacturers are becoming technology companies. Continental is presented not simply as a tire manufacturer, but as a supplier involved in sensors, vehicle systems and autonomous driving technologies.

Schaeffler showcases developments in areas such as thermal management and drivetrain components, while Hankook expands the conversation beyond tires into new mobility and energy technologies. Futuristic tire concepts also suggest that even one of the oldest parts of the automobile could evolve far beyond its traditional role.

Battery and energy specialists such as VARTA and Optima also have a major presence, while Osram demonstrates how lighting companies are expanding into products including chargers, battery starters, inspection solutions and vehicle care technology. At Automechanika, almost every component of the modern car appears to be undergoing its own technological transformation.

Automechanika Frankfurt is built around the future of automotive business

Automechanika Frankfurt is built around the future of automotive business

Automechanika Frankfurt began in 1971 with around 400 exhibitors after circumstances prevented the traditional Frankfurt Motor Show from taking place. Decades later, it has grown into a massive international meeting point for manufacturers, distributors, workshop owners, technology companies and automotive professionals.

The 2026 edition brings together around 4,400 exhibitors from more than 80 countries, with hundreds of demonstrations, workshops and events taking place throughout the exhibition. Technology also makes networking easier, with interactive systems designed to connect visitors directly with representatives and potential partners in markets around the world.

And it is not all business. Modified cars, classics, off road experiences, Dakar inspired displays and spectacular machines give enthusiasts plenty to explore between the technical halls.
