Bugatti is closing the chapter on the legendary W16 engine that powered the Veyron and Chiron, but the Tourbillon proves that the brand is not ready to give up the drama of internal combustion. Its new 8.3 litre naturally aspirated V16 was developed with Cosworth, produces 1000 hp and revs to 9000 rpm. Just as importantly, Bugatti wanted the engine to sound completely authentic, without relying on artificial cabin audio or digitally generated effects.
Bugatti designed the Tourbillon around the idea that a sixteen cylinder engine should sound raw, powerful and unmistakably mechanical. Engineers ran thousands of digital simulations on the intake and exhaust systems to create the right balance between refinement during normal driving and a much more dramatic sound under hard acceleration. The challenge was achieving that character while still meeting strict noise regulations, which consider not only exhaust sound but also tire noise, airflow and active aerodynamic components. Despite those limitations, Bugatti chose to preserve the natural voice of the V16, making sound an essential part of the Tourbillon experience rather than something added through speakers.
The Tourbillon arrives at a time when electric hypercars can deliver extreme acceleration with very little mechanical drama. Bugatti takes a different route by making the V16 itself part of the emotional appeal, allowing drivers to hear and feel the engine as it climbs toward 9000 rpm. That approach turns performance into a more sensory experience and reinforces the idea that speed alone does not define a hypercar. Demand also suggests that buyers still value this kind of engineering, with planned Tourbillon production already sold out through 2029. For enthusiasts, the Tourbillon stands as proof that authentic engine sound can remain one of the most memorable parts of a modern performance car.
