Jeep is exploring the return of one of the most iconic names in its history. During the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the American automaker revealed early plans for a new compact off road SUV inspired by the legendary Willys, the vehicle that helped establish Jeep as a symbol of adventure and rugged capability.
According to Xavier Peugeot, head of Jeep in Europe, the goal is to bring the original Willys spirit into a modern vehicle designed specifically for European drivers. With compact dimensions, advanced technology and genuine off road capabilities, the upcoming model could become one of the most interesting additions to the Jeep lineup after 2030.
The original Willys built its reputation on simplicity, durability and the ability to tackle challenging terrain. Jeep wants to bring those qualities into a new generation of vehicles while adapting to modern technology and electrification.
Four wheel drive capability is expected to remain a central part of the new model, potentially using a mechanical or electric system depending on the final powertrain configuration.
The vehicle could also adopt the future STLA One platform from Stellantis, which is expected to support different powertrain options, including electric and hybrid technologies.
However, the final platform and technical specifications have not yet been confirmed.
Jeep also wants the new SUV to have its own identity rather than simply becoming a redesigned version of another Stellantis model. That means distinctive styling, dedicated engineering and a strong focus on the adventurous character associated with the Willys name.
The potential Willys revival is part of a broader strategy to expand Jeep in Europe through four new models targeting different SUV categories.
One of the most important additions will be the next generation Jeep Renegade, which is expected to arrive before 2030 and continue the brand presence in the compact SUV segment.
Jeep is also preparing a larger SUV positioned in the D segment, designed for customers who need more interior space, everyday comfort and long distance practicality.
Another important model is the Jeep Recon, an electric SUV developed with serious off road adventures in mind.
The fourth vehicle would be the Willys inspired compact SUV, offering a smaller and potentially more agile alternative for drivers who want traditional Jeep capability without the size of larger off road vehicles.
Together, these models could help Jeep reach a wider audience while maintaining its reputation for adventurous vehicles.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Willys revival is its potential size. The original Willys measured approximately 132 inches in length, making it around 10 inches shorter than the modern Fiat 500e.
Although the upcoming vehicle is not expected to copy those dimensions exactly, its compact proportions could become a major advantage in European cities, where narrow streets, limited parking spaces and smaller roads make large SUVs less practical. A lightweight and maneuverable design could also improve its performance on tight trails and challenging terrain, allowing drivers to enjoy off road adventures without needing a full size vehicle.
However, the same dimensions that could make the Willys attractive in Europe might limit its appeal in North America, where buyers generally favor larger SUVs.
The modern Willys project remains in its early development stages, and Jeep has not announced an official production date.
The company is reportedly working toward defining the concept around 2030, with a potential market introduction sometime after that.
Europe appears to be the primary target for the vehicle, while a North American launch has not been confirmed.
Important details such as the final design, dimensions, powertrain options, battery capacity and pricing remain unknown.
For now, the possibility of bringing back the Willys name represents an exciting direction for Jeep. By combining compact dimensions, modern electrification and authentic four wheel drive capability, the company could create a new kind of off road SUV that celebrates its heritage while responding to the demands of European drivers.
If the project reaches production, the new Willys could prove that serious adventure does not always require a large SUV, and that one of the most recognizable names in Jeep history still has a place in the future.
