Long before performance SUVs became a global trend, Lamborghini introduced a vehicle that challenged every automotive convention. In 1986, the Italian manufacturer unveiled the LM002 at the Brussels Motor Show, creating what many enthusiasts now recognize as the world's first true Super SUV. Combining a powerful V12 engine with serious off road capability, the LM002 delivered an experience unlike anything else available at the time.
Four decades later, the model remains one of the most fascinating chapters in Lamborghini history. Not only did it pave the way for the modern Urus family, but it also demonstrated how the brand could blend supercar performance with luxury, practicality, and extreme all terrain capability.
Building the LM002 was not a straightforward process. Beginning in the late 1970s, Lamborghini experimented with several off road concepts, including the Cheetah and LM001 prototypes. Engineers quickly discovered that placing the engine at the rear created balance and steering challenges during demanding desert driving conditions.
Responding to these issues, engineer Giulio Alfieri developed a new front engine layout that transformed the vehicle's dynamics. Years of testing across the deserts of Saudi Arabia helped refine the concept before the production LM002 finally arrived in 1986.
Power came from the legendary 5.2 liter V12 engine derived from the Countach Quattrovalvole. Producing approximately 450 horsepower, the LM002 could exceed 200 kmh, a remarkable achievement for a vehicle weighing more than 2.7 tons. Advanced four wheel drive technology, locking differentials, and specially developed Pirelli Scorpion BK tires allowed it to conquer sand dunes, rocky trails, and steep gradients while maintaining impressive on road performance.
Producing only 301 examples between 1986 and 1992 transformed the LM002 into one of Lamborghini's rarest and most collectible vehicles. Beyond its exclusivity, the model established the foundation for a new category that would become one of the automotive industry's most successful segments decades later.
When Lamborghini introduced the Urus concept in 2012 and later launched the production model in 2017, many of the ideas first explored by the LM002 returned in a modern form. Both vehicles share the philosophy of combining extreme performance with luxury and everyday usability, creating a driving experience unique to Lamborghini.
Today, Lamborghini Polo Storico continues preserving the LM002's heritage through restoration programs, authenticity certifications, and partnerships with suppliers such as Pirelli. One of the most notable achievements has been the return of the historic Scorpion BK tires, allowing owners to maintain their vehicles exactly as originally intended.
Forty years after its debut, the LM002 remains a symbol of Lamborghini's willingness to challenge expectations. By creating a high performance luxury off roader decades before the segment existed, Lamborghini proved that innovation often comes from taking risks, a philosophy that continues to define the brand's most exciting vehicles today.
