Maserati Celebrates 100 Years With Three Racing Icons at Goodwood

20 Sep 2026
  • Why is the Maserati Eldorado so important?
  • Why was the Maserati Tipo 61 called Birdcage?
  • What makes the Berlinetta A6GCS 53 so special?

Maserati is celebrating a century of automotive history at Goodwood Revival with three extraordinary cars from the Panini Collection. Together, they tell very different stories about Italian racing, engineering and design.

The display brings together the Maserati Eldorado, the Tipo 61 Birdcage and the exceptionally rare Berlinetta A6GCS 53. Presented as part of the Italian inspired La Dolce Vita celebration, the collection takes visitors back to an era when Maserati was building some of the most distinctive racing machines in the world.

The Maserati Tipo 420M 58, better known as the Eldorado, represents an important moment in motorsport history.

Created in 1958 for the Race of Two Worlds at Monza, the single seat racer carried prominent sponsorship from Italian ice cream company Eldorado. This made it one of the earliest European racing cars to embrace commercial sponsorship from a company outside the automotive industry.

The car used a 4.2 liter V8 and a two speed transmission, with legendary driver Stirling Moss behind the wheel. Its distinctive Eldorado branding turned an extremely fast racing machine into what could effectively be described as one of the fastest ice cream advertisements ever created.

The Tipo 61 earned its Birdcage nickname because of the unusual structure hidden underneath its body.

Instead of relying on a conventional chassis, Maserati constructed an intricate space frame from more than 200 small steel tubes.

The design created a structure that combined impressive rigidity with low weight, helping the car remain responsive through corners without adding unnecessary mass.

Its engineering became so distinctive that the Birdcage name eventually became almost as recognizable as Tipo 61 itself among classic motorsport enthusiasts.

The Berlinetta A6GCS 53 brings a completely different character to the Goodwood display.

First presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1954, the car combined the mechanical foundations of the A6GCS 53 racing car with an elegant closed coupe body created by Pininfarina.

Only four examples were produced, making the Berlinetta one of the rarest Maserati models from this period.

Its combination of racing engineering, exclusivity and Italian coachbuilding makes seeing one in person an exceptional opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts.

Each vehicle represents a different part of the Maserati story. The Eldorado demonstrates how motorsport was beginning to embrace commercial sponsorship, while the Birdcage highlights the creative engineering solutions developed in pursuit of lower weight and better performance.

The Berlinetta A6GCS 53 represents another side of the brand, combining motorsport foundations with the elegance of traditional Italian design.

Together at Goodwood Revival, the three cars offer a remarkable look at the ideas that shaped Maserati during the golden age of motor racing.

From an ice cream sponsored racing car driven by Stirling Moss to the intricate engineering of the Birdcage and the extraordinary rarity of the A6GCS 53, Maserati is bringing much more than classic cars to Goodwood.

The three machines tell stories of racing, experimentation and Italian design that helped establish the Trident as one of the most recognizable names in automotive history.
