Continuing its mission to revive some of its most beloved performance icons, Toyota appears to be working on a new sports car that could become one of the brand’s most exciting projects in decades. Recent engineering reports suggest that the upcoming model will take inspiration from the legendary MR2 while introducing a modern formula designed to deliver exceptional performance on both road and track.
Rather than following the traditional rear wheel drive approach found in many sports cars, Toyota is reportedly exploring a more advanced configuration that combines a mid mounted engine with an intelligent all wheel drive system. The project remains under development, but early details indicate that it could become a key addition to the growing Gazoo Racing lineup.
Revealing the thinking behind the project, Naohiko Saito, Chief Engineer of Toyota GR, explained that extensive testing has led the company toward a unique conclusion. According to Saito, combining a mid engine platform with all wheel drive creates the ideal architecture for high performance driving.
Placing the engine in the center of the vehicle helps achieve near perfect weight distribution between the front and rear axles, improving balance and agility through corners. Adding all wheel drive enhances traction and stability, allowing the car to deliver its performance more effectively in a wider range of driving conditions.
Toyota is already exploring part of this concept through its Concept M prototype, a mid engine rear wheel drive test vehicle currently competing in Japan's Super Taikyu racing series. The lessons learned from that program are expected to play a major role in shaping the future production model, which could draw styling inspiration from the futuristic FT Se concept.
To ensure the upcoming model can compete with some of the most capable compact sports cars on the market, Toyota is expected to equip it with the new G20E engine. This turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder powerplant has already generated significant attention thanks to reports suggesting output figures exceeding 400 horsepower.
Power is expected to be delivered through an advanced eight speed automatic transmission developed and refined through Toyota's GR performance models. The gearbox would work alongside an all wheel drive system designed to maximize grip, improve acceleration, and enhance cornering performance.
Carrying the prestigious GR badge, the new sports car would also strengthen Toyota's growing performance portfolio. By combining a lightweight sports car layout with a powerful turbocharged engine and all wheel drive capability, Toyota could create a highly desirable machine that appeals to enthusiasts looking for a modern interpretation of the classic analogue driving experience. If priced competitively, it may become one of the most exciting sports car launches of the coming decade.
