NASCAR is one of the most recognizable names in American motorsport, but many fans know it simply as the name of a racing series without knowing what the letters actually mean. NASCAR stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, a name that reflects both the organization behind the sport and the type of racing it was originally created to regulate.
Founded in February 1948 by Bill France Sr. in Daytona Beach, Florida, NASCAR was established to bring structure and consistency to a racing scene that had previously been far less organized. Over the decades, it grew from a national governing body for stock car racing into one of the largest motorsport organizations in the world.
Each part of the NASCAR name has a specific purpose. National reflects the goal of creating a unified racing organization across the United States, while Association highlights its role as an official governing body that creates and enforces competition rules.
Stock Car refers to the type of vehicle that originally defined the sport. These cars were based closely on regular production vehicles that customers could buy from dealerships. Auto Racing simply defines the activity the organization oversees.
The name therefore describes exactly what NASCAR was created to be: a national organization responsible for regulating stock car competition.
NASCAR succeeded by combining strict organization with a simple and recognizable identity. Standardized rules, structured championships and consistent branding helped transform what had once been a collection of regional racing events into a major national sport.
The organization also maintained the idea that its race cars should visually connect with familiar production models, even as the engineering underneath became far more specialized.

One of the most common misunderstandings is calling the car itself a NASCAR. Technically, NASCAR is the organization that manages and regulates the racing, while the vehicle is called a stock car.
NASCAR organized its first official race on February 15, 1948, at the Daytona Beach road and beach course in Florida.
Its top division was originally known as Strictly Stock before evolving over the decades into what is now called the NASCAR Cup Series.
