Why Electric Cars Make Their Owners Happier

02 Aug 2026
  • What did the 2026 JD Power APEAL Study reveal?
  • Why do owners prefer electric powertrains?
  • What developments are making electric cars more satisfying?

Electric cars continue to face questions about charging, range and purchase prices, yet their owners appear to enjoy them more than drivers of gasoline and hybrid vehicles. The 2026 JD Power Automotive Performance Execution and Layout Study found that fully electric vehicles achieved the highest satisfaction score across the major powertrain categories.

The study collected responses from 78,514 owners of new 2026 model vehicles after their first 90 days of ownership. It examined 37 areas connected to vehicle design, performance, comfort and the emotional experience of driving.

Electric Cars Lead Owner Satisfaction

Electric vehicles recorded an average score of 910 points out of 1,000, while vehicles powered by gasoline, diesel and hybrid systems averaged 850 points. This created a clear 60 point advantage for fully electric models.

The results suggest that electric vehicles deliver more than lower local emissions. Owners also appreciate the way these vehicles accelerate, operate and respond during daily driving.

Battery powered vehicles improved by 22 points compared with the previous year, representing the largest annual increase among the powertrain categories included in the study.

This improvement is especially important because electric cars are now reaching a broader audience. Their buyers are no longer limited to early technology enthusiasts who may be more willing to accept compromises.

A Smoother Driving Experience

A Smoother Driving Experience

Electric vehicles scored 109 points higher than combustion vehicles in powertrain satisfaction, creating the largest difference between the two groups.

Electric motors deliver their power almost immediately. This gives the vehicle smooth and rapid acceleration without waiting for an engine to build speed or a transmission to select another gear.

Drivers also experience fewer vibrations and less mechanical noise inside the cabin. The absence of traditional engine sounds can make urban journeys feel calmer, especially during slow traffic and frequent stops.

Most electric models also provide simple operation through a single speed transmission. Regenerative braking can slow the vehicle when the driver releases the accelerator, which may create a more relaxed experience once the driver becomes familiar with it.

Longer driving ranges and faster charging systems are reducing several concerns traditionally linked to electric vehicle ownership. Improved battery management and more efficient heat pumps also help preserve range during changing weather conditions.

Growing access to the North American Charging Standard is giving drivers a wider choice of compatible public chargers. Better route planning systems can identify charging locations, estimate arrival battery levels and include charging stops during longer journeys.

Many electric vehicles also offer advanced cabin technology, remote climate control and frequent software updates. These features can make the ownership experience feel more convenient and personalized.

JD Power found that electric vehicles performed strongly in nearly every measured category. Areas of satisfaction included powertrain performance, driving comfort, operating experience, infotainment and energy efficiency.
