Plug in hybrid technology is becoming increasingly important in the SUV world, but it has not always been the obvious choice for serious off road driving. Horse Powertrain, the joint venture involving Geely and Renault, wants to change that perception with its new 3DHT200 hybrid system.
The compact powertrain has been engineered specifically to combine massive torque, flexible electric driving and improved efficiency in large SUVs. Its first expected application will be the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700, an upcoming rugged SUV designed for demanding terrain.
The biggest innovation behind the 3DHT200 is its highly integrated design. Horse Powertrain combines 13 major components within a single compact unit, helping reduce the overall package size by around 10 percent.
The system can deliver up to 4,920 Nm of torque at the wheels, giving suitably equipped vehicles the mechanical capability to tackle gradients of up to 45 degrees.
Two electric motors play different roles. The P1 motor produces 148 hp and primarily works as a generator and starter, while the more powerful P3 motor produces 308 hp and provides direct propulsion.
The package also integrates power electronics, an onboard charger, a DC to DC converter, power distribution hardware, thermal management and a three speed hybrid transmission.
The 3DHT200 can operate differently depending on speed and driving conditions.
At lower speeds, it can work as a series hybrid. In this mode, the combustion engine generates electricity while the electric motors provide propulsion. This setup is particularly useful when smooth low speed torque is more important than direct engine power.
At higher speeds, the system can switch to parallel hybrid operation. The combustion engine then connects more directly to the wheels through the three speed transmission, helping improve efficiency and maintain strong performance.
The system can also support electronic four wheel drive when paired with an independent rear electric motor. This allows torque to be distributed quickly between the front and rear axles when traction conditions change.
The Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 is expected to become the first production vehicle to use the new 3DHT200 system.
The boxy SUV is being developed with serious off road capability in mind and is expected to deliver combined output approaching 1,113 hp when its complete hybrid system is taken into account.
That level of performance places the Cruiser 700 among a growing generation of high output electrified SUVs that use electric motors not only for efficiency but also for instant torque and precise traction control.
The combination of a front mounted hybrid unit and a separate rear electric motor should also allow the vehicle to react rapidly when grip changes across sand, steep slopes or loose surfaces.
Horse Powertrain says the technology could allow large SUVs to achieve fuel consumption of around 5 litres per 100 km, depending on the final vehicle configuration and operating conditions.
That figure highlights one of the biggest advantages of advanced hybrid systems. Electric propulsion can handle low speed driving and recover energy during deceleration, while the combustion engine can operate more efficiently when sustained power is required.
For off road vehicles, the benefits go beyond fuel economy. Electric motors can deliver torque instantly and allow much more precise control over how power reaches individual axles.
The 3DHT200 shows how hybrid technology could reshape the next generation of rugged SUVs. Instead of forcing buyers to choose between serious off road performance and efficiency, systems like this aim to deliver both in the same package.
