Four time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen is preparing for one of the most unusual racing challenges of his career. On September 16, Verstappen will start from the very back of a 101 kart grid at Silverstone and attempt to race his way past 100 competitors.

Called Max vs 100, the event brings together Disney Plus, ESPN and Red Bull for a live global broadcast that mixes serious racing with entertainment and digital production. It also takes Verstappen back to the discipline where his motorsport journey began as a child.

Verstappen will begin the race from position 101, giving every other competitor a head start and turning the event into a huge overtaking challenge.

The grid will feature a mix of Red Bull athletes, professional gaming competitors, content creators and selected fans. This variety should create a race that feels very different from a conventional motorsport event.

French racing driver and kart designer David Terrien has helped create the special Silverstone layout for the challenge. The course has been designed to encourage overtaking and maintain high speeds, giving Verstappen plenty of opportunities to move through the field.

The event will be streamed live through Disney Plus and the ESPN app, giving viewers around the world access to the race. ESPN2 will also show a later broadcast.

Production company Whisper will handle the live coverage using fast drone footage, cinematic camera angles and graphics inspired by racing video games.

Live data will show information such as kart speeds and positions directly over the broadcast. British comedian Mo Gilligan will host the show, adding a more entertainment focused style alongside the racing action.

The challenge gives Verstappen an opportunity to return to the form of racing that launched his career. He began karting at around four years old before progressing through the junior categories and eventually reaching Formula 1.

Starting from the back also adds an interesting competitive element. Rather than simply demonstrating outright speed, Verstappen will need to manage traffic, choose overtaking opportunities and work through a huge field.

That makes Max vs 100 both a showcase of his racing ability and a reminder of how important karting remains in developing many of the worlds leading drivers.

Max vs 100 reflects a growing effort by streaming platforms to create original motorsport content outside traditional race weekends.

The event combines professional racing, online creators, gaming culture and interactive broadcast technology in a format designed to reach audiences beyond regular Formula 1 fans.

It also shows how motorsport entertainment is changing. Instead of relying only on established championships, broadcasters can now build standalone live events around major drivers and distribute them globally.

For Verstappen, the challenge offers something completely different from a Grand Prix. For viewers, it creates the rare sight of one of the worlds fastest racing drivers starting last and trying to pass 100 rivals in a single karting event.
