At a time when much of the automotive world is moving toward downsized engines and electrification, Mercedes AMG has made a bold statement. The brand has unveiled the extensively updated GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+, proving that the legendary V8 remains at the heart of its performance identity.

The two flagship SUVs arrive with a thoroughly reengineered 4.0 litre twin turbocharged V8, fresh exterior styling, advanced chassis technology, and a renewed focus on delivering the emotional driving experience AMG customers expect. More importantly, Mercedes AMG has confirmed that the V8 is not going anywhere anytime soon.

A New Era for the AMG V8

A New Era for the AMG V8

The biggest headline comes from under the hood. Both the GLE 63 S and GLS 63 are powered by the new generation AMG M177 EVO engine, a heavily revised version of the brand's famous 4.0 litre twin turbocharged V8.

Producing 612 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, the engine delivers the same peak output as before, but the engineering underneath has changed dramatically. Mercedes AMG has introduced a flat plane crankshaft, optimized fuel injection, redesigned intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft, and improvements to both the turbocharger housing and compressor wheel.

The result is an engine that responds more quickly, revs more freely, and delivers power with greater precision. According to AMG, these upgrades also help ensure compliance with future global emissions regulations while preserving the character enthusiasts love.

Adding to the experience is the latest ISG 2.0 integrated starter generator. Powered by a 48 volt electrical system, it contributes an additional 23 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque when needed. It also improves low speed response, supports energy recovery, and enables smoother engine restarts.

Performance remains deeply impressive. The GLE 63 S accelerates from 0 to 100 kmh in just 3.9 seconds, while the larger GLS 63 completes the sprint in 4.2 seconds. Both models reach an electronically limited top speed of 280 kmh.

More Aggressive Design With a Stronger AMG Identity

More Aggressive Design With a Stronger AMG Identity

Mercedes AMG wanted the new SUVs to look as powerful as they feel, and the changes are immediately noticeable.

The front fascia has been completely redesigned around a new AMG specific grille that creates a wider and more commanding appearance. Larger air intakes improve cooling for the V8 while adding visual drama. Exclusive LED headlights with a unique AMG light signature further separate these models from the standard GLE and GLS lineup.

At the rear, the new AMG Performance exhaust system becomes a focal point. Large twin tailpipes, a more pronounced diffuser, and revised bumper details emphasize the vehicles' performance credentials.

The new exhaust system is not only about appearance. Drivers can actively adjust the sound character depending on the selected driving mode. In Comfort mode, the V8 remains refined and civilized. Switch to Sport+ and the soundtrack becomes considerably more emotional and aggressive.

Mercedes AMG has also expanded wheel options. Buyers can choose wheel designs up to 22 inches on the GLE 63 S and up to 23 inches on the GLS 63, allowing for a more personalized and dramatic appearance.

Performance Meets Luxury and Everyday Usability

Performance Meets Luxury and Everyday Usability

One of the greatest strengths of the GLE 63 S and GLS 63 has always been their ability to combine sports car performance with everyday practicality, and the new models continue that tradition.

The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension adapts continuously to road conditions and driver inputs. Depending on the selected mode, the SUVs can transform from comfortable long distance cruisers into highly capable performance machines.

For drivers venturing off paved roads, the Trail mode raises ride height by 55 mm and adjusts suspension, damping, and all wheel drive settings for improved capability. The system can also raise the vehicle by up to 20 mm when additional ground clearance is needed.

Meanwhile, AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL actively counters body roll through electronically controlled stabilizers on both axles. Sensors monitor vehicle movement up to 1,000 times every second, helping maintain exceptional stability through corners while improving comfort on uneven surfaces.

Power is managed through AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all wheel drive and an electronically controlled rear locking differential. Together, they optimize traction, stability, and agility in every driving situation, whether on dry pavement, wet roads, or snow covered surfaces.

Step inside and the latest AMG performance SUVs combine cutting edge technology with handcrafted luxury.

The newest AMG Performance steering wheel takes center stage and can be specified in Nappa leather, MICROCUT microfiber, or carbon fiber. Integrated AMG controls allow drivers to access performance settings instantly without taking their hands off the wheel.

The cabin can be finished in a wide range of premium materials. Buyers can choose from several Nappa leather colors, including Macchiato Beige, Red Pepper, Beech Brown, and Black. Exclusive MANUFAKTUR options add even more individuality with finishes such as Yacht Blue, Tartufo Brown, and Carmine Red.

Technology receives a major upgrade through the new MB.OS operating system. High resolution displays provide access to AMG specific information including torque distribution, G force readings, and detailed engine data. The system combines intuitive operation with a distinctly performance focused presentation.

Mercedes AMG Keeps the V8 Alive

The unveiling of the new GLE 63 S and GLS 63 represents more than just a model update. It is a clear statement from Mercedes AMG about the future of performance.

While many manufacturers continue moving away from large displacement engines, AMG has invested heavily in ensuring the V8 survives into the next era. The revised M177 EVO demonstrates that performance, efficiency, and regulatory compliance can coexist without sacrificing character.

For enthusiasts, that means the unmistakable sound, instant torque, and emotional appeal of a handcrafted AMG V8 remain alive and well. And in two of the most powerful luxury SUVs on the market, that promise may be more exciting than ever.
