Nissan Patrol PRO 4X Test Drive: The Ultimate Off Road Patrol!

01 Sep 2026
  • How does 425 hp feel from behind the wheel?
  • What actually makes the PRO 4X the ultimate off road Patrol?
  • Can a luxury cabin actually make off road driving easier?
  • Is the Nissan Patrol PRO 4X worth choosing in Abu Dhabi?

Our experience with the Nissan Patrol PRO 4X started with Al Masaood Automobiles, the authorised Nissan distributor in Abu Dhabi, giving us the opportunity to spend some proper time exploring what might be the most adventure-focused version of the new Patrol. The first thing I noticed was not a specification on a sheet, but how different the PRO 4X feels when you actually stand beside it. The Patrol has always had an unmistakable presence in Abu Dhabi, but this version looks ready to leave the road almost immediately. The wider black wheel arches, dark exterior elements, distinctive PRO 4X details, Lava Red tow hooks, and a specially designed front bumper give it a much tougher personality.

Look underneath, and the changes become even more meaningful, with additional protection and a skid plate designed for demanding terrain. The 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires complete the transformation. It still carries the size and premium character I expect from a Patrol, but everything I was seeing told me that Al Masaood Automobiles had handed us a Patrol designed with exploration in mind.

Twin Turbo Power On The Road

Twin Turbo Power On The Road

Climbing into the driver's seat changed the mood completely because, despite everything rugged on the outside, the Patrol PRO 4X still feels like a proper luxury SUV from behind the wheel. Leaving Al Masaood Automobiles and heading onto the roads of Abu Dhabi gave me the chance to experience the side of this vehicle that owners will probably use most often. Under the hood is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 425 hp and 700 Nm of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and Four Wheel Drive. That 700 Nm figure becomes very easy to understand once you press the accelerator.

The PRO 4X moves forward with an effortless surge that almost makes you forget how large it is. Acceleration feels strong without being aggressive; the transmission moves through its gears smoothly, and the high seating position gives me that commanding Patrol view of the road. The adaptive air suspension also plays an important role here. Al Masaood Automobiles has highlighted this system as one of the key technologies available on the PRO 4X, and on regular roads it helps the SUV feel impressively composed and comfortable despite the serious off-road equipment underneath.

Into The Sand

Into The Sand

This is the part I had been waiting for because the PRO 4X name only really makes sense once the smooth road is behind you. I can choose between six driving modes, including Standard, Eco, Sport, Sand, Mud and Rock, allowing the Patrol to adapt to what I am driving over. It also has a rear differential lock when additional traction is needed, and the adaptive air suspension can adjust vehicle height depending on the situation. What I noticed is how all these individual features work together rather than feeling like accessories added to a regular Patrol.

The redesigned front bumper improves clearance when approaching difficult terrain, the all-terrain tires provide the right footprint underneath me, and the skid plate adds protection when the surface becomes less predictable. Nissan has also reinforced the PRO 4X specifically for this type of use. For drivers in Abu Dhabi who genuinely enjoy heading into the desert, that makes the difference. This is not simply the Patrol that looks the most adventurous in the Al Masaood Automobiles showroom. It is a Patrol with factory-fitted hardware designed to make those adventures possible.

Technology That Helps Me See The Terrain

Technology That Helps Me See The Terrain

The surprising part of driving the PRO 4X is how quickly I forget that I am sitting inside such a capable off road vehicle. The cabin feels every bit as modern and comfortable as I would expect from the latest Patrol. Directly in front of me is the wide digital interface with two 14.3 inch displays, while the PRO 4X receives its own embroidered quilted leather seats. The front seats offer heating and cooling, an especially welcome feature during the warmer months in Abu Dhabi, and the cabin can also be equipped with features such as tri-zone climate control, a cooling box, wireless phone charging, and the 12-speaker Klipsch premium audio system. But the technology becomes even more interesting once I start using the Patrol away from perfect roads.

The 3D Around View Monitor gives me a better understanding of what surrounds this huge SUV, while Invisible Hood View helps show the area that would normally disappear underneath the front of the vehicle. Instead of trying to guess where the wheels are going when approaching an obstacle, I can actually use the cameras to place the Patrol more accurately. It is one of those technologies that sounds impressive in the Al Masaood Automobiles showroom but becomes genuinely useful once you experience it from behind the wheel.

Price And Final Verdict

Price And Final Verdict

By the time I returned the Patrol PRO 4X to Al Masaood Automobiles, what impressed me most was not one feature but how complete the experience felt. This is still an eight seat Patrol that can handle family duties, long drives and everyday life with the comfort expected from Nissan flagship SUV, but underneath that luxury is a much more serious off road package.

Al Masaood Automobiles currently offers the Nissan Patrol PRO 4X in Abu Dhabi with a starting price of AED 362,900 including VAT, placing it above the regular Patrol but giving buyers considerably more specialized equipment for exploring beyond the road. For me, that is what makes the PRO 4X so interesting. You do not need to accept a basic interior to get a serious off road SUV, and you do not need to give up genuine capability to enjoy a luxurious Patrol. After experiencing it through Al Masaood Automobiles, the PRO 4X feels like the Patrol for someone who wants the comfort and presence of the new generation but still sees the desert as somewhere waiting to be explored.
