Few classic sports cars are as instantly recognizable as the Aston Martin DB5. Its legendary appearance alongside James Bond in the 1964 film Goldfinger transformed the elegant British grand tourer into a global automotive icon.

For enthusiast Elliott Brody, however, the DB5 represented something more personal. A childhood fascination with the Bond car eventually became the inspiration for an ambitious restoration project that turned a 1964 DB5 into a carefully upgraded machine designed to preserve its classic character while making it far more enjoyable to drive today.

The project began with Aston Martin DB5 chassis number 1750/R. The car originally left the factory finished in British Racing Green, but Brody wanted to recreate the visual character associated with the famous Bond DB5.

The body was stripped down and extensively restored before being refinished in Silver Birch, the metallic silver color closely associated with the cinematic car.

Inside, the cabin received a complete refurbishment with premium grey Connolly leather, maintaining the elegant atmosphere expected from a classic British grand tourer.

The James Bond influence also appears through a playful detail inspired by Q Branch. A concealed compartment beneath the dashboard was designed to hold a Walther PPK and can be opened using a control integrated into the gear selector.

Despite its modern upgrades, the DB5 has not been turned into a modern sports car disguised beneath an old body.

The 4.7 litre engine delivers a deep mechanical soundtrack and strong throttle response, providing enough performance to move the approximately 1,500 kg grand tourer with impressive ease.

The suspension and braking upgrades make the car feel more secure and predictable, but some traditional body movement remains when entering corners.

Rather than being a weakness, that movement preserves part of the character drivers expect from a sports car developed during the 1960s.

More Power Beneath the Classic Body

This project was never intended to create a static museum piece. The goal was to build a DB5 capable of being regularly enjoyed on public roads and even driven enthusiastically on a circuit.

The original 4.0 litre six cylinder engine was replaced with a larger 4.7 litre unit built to Vantage specifications by Aston Engineering.

The upgraded engine produces more than 352 hp and approximately 340 lb ft of torque at the rear wheels, giving the classic Aston significantly stronger performance while retaining the smooth character of its traditional straight six configuration.

Several changes were made to improve usability without removing the personality that defines the DB5.

The steering layout was converted from right hand drive to left hand drive to make the car more suitable for use on American roads.

Power assisted steering was also added, while upgraded suspension and braking components improve control and confidence behind the wheel.

Borrani wheels complete the period inspired appearance, while integrated air conditioning makes the cabin considerably more comfortable during longer drives and warmer weather.
