Rare 1966 Ford T5 Is the Mustang With a Secret Name

06 May 2026
  • What makes the 1966 Ford T5 different from a Mustang?
  • Why is this 1966 Ford T5 so collectible?
  • Why will Ford fans love this rare T5?

Some classic cars attract attention because of power, beauty, or rarity. This 1966 Ford T5 brings all three together with a story that makes it even more special. At first glance, it looks like a clean black Mustang coupe from the golden age of American performance. Look closer, and the story changes. This car was sold in Europe under the T5 name because Ford could not use the Mustang badge in Germany at the time.

European Identity

European Identity

The Ford T5 exists because the Mustang name was already used in Germany by another manufacturer. Instead of paying for the trademark rights, Ford sold its pony car there under the T5 name, which came from the internal project code used during Mustang development.

This gave the car a unique identity. Ford removed Mustang branding from areas like the steering wheel and added T5 badges on the fenders. The result was still very much a Mustang in spirit, but with a rare European twist that makes it highly interesting for collectors today.

K Code Performance

K Code Performance

This example becomes even more desirable because it has the legendary 289 cubic inch K Code V8. From the factory, this high performance engine produced 271 horsepower and came paired here with a four speed manual transmission.

The car is also said to be the last T5 built with the K Code V8 and the only one finished in black from the factory. Restored around 10 years ago, it wears a sharp black over tan color combination and has received recent mechanical attention, including brake work, valve cover gaskets, and earlier service to the carburetor and radiator.

Auction Appeal

Auction Appeal

This Ford T5 offers the kind of backstory that makes a classic car feel alive. It looks like a Mustang, drives with Mustang character, and carries Mustang performance, yet its European naming history gives it a different kind of charm.

For collectors, that combination of rarity, condition, color, and K Code power makes it stand out at any car show. The auction ends on May 6, and whoever wins it will own a pony car that can start a conversation before the engine even turns over.
