Geely Redefines Engine Efficiency with a Game Changing Hybrid

16 Apr 2026
  • How does Geely’s new engine compare to Toyota and Nissan in thermal efficiency?
  • How does AI improve performance and what fuel economy can drivers expect?

In a world that is rapidly shifting toward full electrification, Geely surprises the industry with a bold engineering breakthrough that challenges expectations. The Chinese automaker is no longer just competing on production scale. It now positions itself as a serious technology leader after unveiling a hybrid engine that achieves the highest thermal efficiency ever seen in a production car. This move reshapes the conversation around internal combustion engines and proves they still have room to evolve in a smarter and more efficient direction.

Record Breaking Efficiency

Record Breaking Efficiency

Geely pushes the limits of what traditional engines can achieve by reaching a thermal efficiency of 48.4 percent with its new i HEV hybrid system. This number is not just impressive. It changes the benchmark for the entire industry. Thermal efficiency measures how much energy from fuel is actually converted into usable power, and in most engines, a large portion is lost as heat.

By comparison, some of the most advanced engines from Toyota and Nissan operate around the 42 percent mark. Conventional gasoline engines typically fall between 25 and 35 percent. This means Geely manages to convert nearly half of the fuel into real driving power, a level that was once considered extremely difficult to achieve in mass production vehicles.

This leap places Geely very close to the efficiency levels seen in Formula 1 engines, which exceed 50 percent but require extremely complex and expensive technology. The key difference is that Geely delivers this performance in cars designed for everyday drivers, making high efficiency more accessible than ever before.

Smart Hybrid Technology

Smart Hybrid Technology

Geely does not rely on mechanical improvements alone. It integrates advanced artificial intelligence into its i HEV system to optimize energy usage in real time. The system continuously analyzes driving conditions and adjusts how power is distributed between the electric motor and the gasoline engine, whether it is a 1.5 liter or 2.0 liter setup.

This intelligent coordination reduces wasted energy and improves combustion efficiency, allowing the engine to operate at its most effective state more often. Instead of reacting slowly like traditional systems, the AI driven setup makes instant decisions that enhance both performance and fuel savings.

The result is an impressive fuel economy figure of 105 miles per gallon, which translates to 44.6 km per liter. This level of efficiency shows that hybrid technology still has strong potential, especially when combined with smart software.

With these advancements, Geely proves that internal combustion engines are far from outdated. By blending hybrid systems with artificial intelligence, the company creates a new path forward that offers long range, low fuel consumption, and practical usability that many fully electric vehicles still struggle to match in certain conditions.
