Lucid is preparing to enter one of the most competitive parts of the electric vehicle market with the Cosmos, a midsize electric SUV designed to bring the brands technology to a much broader audience. The Cosmos will become the first vehicle based on the new Lucid Midsize platform, which has been developed to support models starting below 50000 dollars.
Recent images reveal a sporty SUV with a coupe inspired profile and a noticeably more compact shape than the Gravity. More importantly, the Cosmos represents a major change in strategy for Lucid as the company moves beyond expensive luxury vehicles and prepares to compete more directly with popular electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y.
Gives Lucid the Cosmos a low and sleek profile with a sharply sloping roof that creates a more athletic appearance than a traditional SUV. Recent development vehicles also reveal a wide rear light treatment and a streamlined body focused heavily on aerodynamic efficiency.
Carries the minimalist philosophy into the cabin, where images show a wide digital display positioned in front of the driver. Lucid has not yet revealed the complete production interior, but the layout suggests a simplified digital environment that follows the technology focused approach already established by the Air and Gravity.
Positions Lucid the new Midsize platform below 50000 dollars, opening the brand to customers who may previously have considered its Air and Gravity models too expensive. Lucid says the platform was designed specifically to deliver its efficiency, performance and driving characteristics at a more accessible price.
Places that pricing strategy the Cosmos much closer to high volume electric SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y. Lucid is also developing additional vehicles from the same architecture, including the Earth SUV, as it expands into larger volume segments.
Uses the Cosmos Lucids new Midsize architecture and next generation Atlas electric drive technology. Lucid developed the platform around its focus on efficiency while reducing complexity and manufacturing costs compared with its larger vehicles.
Targets Lucid strong aerodynamic performance and energy efficiency for the new generation. Earlier technical details for the Midsize platform pointed to an aerodynamic drag coefficient below 0.22 and efficiency around 4.3 miles per kWh, although final production specifications for the Cosmos have not yet been announced.
Plans Lucid to manufacture the Cosmos at its AMP 2 facility in Saudi Arabia as part of the expansion of its global production network. The latest information indicates that production is now expected to begin during the second half of 2027, following a delay from the previously planned 2026 schedule.
Explained Lucid CEO Silvio Napoli that the company is placing greater emphasis on quality before launching new vehicles after problems associated with earlier product introductions. This means the Cosmos will arrive later than originally expected, but Lucid intends to use the additional development period to deliver a more polished vehicle.
Makes the Cosmos particularly significant for the region because Saudi Arabia will play a direct role in manufacturing one of Lucids most important upcoming models. If Lucid can combine competitive pricing, strong efficiency and the premium character of its larger vehicles, the Cosmos could become the model that places the brand into direct competition with the biggest names in the global electric SUV market.
