Mercedes Benz Reveals Its Future With 40 New Models, Advanced Batteries and Formula 1 Technology

02 Nov 2026
  • How is Mercedes Benz developing its next generation of electric and hybrid vehicles?
  • Could Mercedes Benz solid state batteries transform electric vehicle range and charging?

Mercedes Benz is preparing for one of the biggest transformations in its 140 year history, with plans to introduce more than 40 new models by the end of 2027. Rather than focusing exclusively on electric vehicles, the German luxury manufacturer is developing a diverse range of electric and hybrid powertrains designed to suit different driving needs. From advanced battery technology and intelligent software to innovative engines inspired by Formula 1, Mercedes Benz is combining its engineering heritage with cutting edge innovation. The ambitious strategy promises to deliver greater efficiency, impressive performance, and the familiar luxury driving experience that has defined the brand for generations.

Electric and Hybrid Powertrains for Every Driver

Electric and Hybrid Powertrains for Every Driver

Mercedes Benz is taking a flexible approach to electrification by developing advanced powertrains that can be adapted across multiple vehicle segments, from compact models like the GLA to flagship luxury vehicles such as the S Class. The company uses billions of kilometers of anonymized real world driving data to understand how customers accelerate, travel, and use their vehicles in different conditions.

Through digital simulations and extensive testing, engineers can optimize power delivery, efficiency, and comfort before new vehicles reach production. The Mercedes Benz Operating System, known as MB.OS, also integrates essential vehicle functions into an intelligent software platform that can receive updates.

For electric vehicles, the manufacturer is expanding its advanced 800 volt architecture, originally inspired by the Vision EQXX technology program. Combined with its internally developed EDU 2.0 electric drive unit and an innovative two speed transmission, this technology is designed to improve efficiency, acceleration, and long distance driving capabilities.

Next Generation Batteries and Record Breaking Range

Battery innovation represents another major priority for Mercedes Benz, with the company developing advanced cell chemistries designed to increase energy density, reduce charging times, and improve affordability.

One particularly promising development involves lithium nickel manganese oxide technology, which could eliminate cobalt and significantly reduce nickel requirements. According to Mercedes Benz, this technology offers the potential to increase driving range by up to 30 percent compared with lithium iron phosphate batteries of comparable weight and packaging dimensions.

The manufacturer is also making progress with solid state batteries through partnerships with Factorial Energy and ProLogium. In a remarkable demonstration, a modified Mercedes Benz EQS equipped with an experimental lithium metal solid state battery completed a 1,205 kilometer journey from Stuttgart to Malmö without recharging.

Although further development and validation are required before commercial production, these advancements highlight the potential for lighter batteries, greater driving range, and more practical electric luxury vehicles.

Mercedes Benz is bringing its Formula 1 expertise into everyday vehicles through closer collaboration with Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in the United Kingdom.

One of the latest innovations is an electrically assisted turbocharger developed for the new 1.5 liter M 252 LS four cylinder petrol engine. The powertrain delivers 170 kW of combustion engine output alongside an additional 23 kW of electrical assistance, while the turbocharger uses a 5 kW electric motor powered by the vehicle's 48 volt electrical system.

Inspired by technology developed for Formula 1, the electric turbocharger improves engine responsiveness across different speeds while supporting lower fuel consumption. Mercedes Benz also claims the updated engine delivers better acceleration and approximately 17 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions in the new GLB 250 compared with the previous generation's equivalent powertrain.

By combining motorsport innovation, next generation batteries, and intelligent vehicle development, Mercedes Benz is demonstrating how traditional combustion engines and electric mobility can continue evolving together.
