Volkswagen ID. Tiguan Replaces ID.4 With Classic Styling and Smarter Tech

10 Oct 2026
  • How does the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan look different from the ID.4?
  • Why is Volkswagen bringing back physical controls?
  • What are the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan performance and battery options?

Volkswagen is taking a new direction with its electric SUV lineup, officially introducing the ID. Tiguan as the successor to the ID.4 and ID.5. Rather than simply updating its existing electric models, the German automaker is bringing back familiar design elements and physical controls while introducing more advanced technology.

Scheduled to arrive in Germany and other European markets in early 2027, the new ID. Tiguan combines a more traditional SUV appearance with three electric powertrain options, a driving range of up to 600 km and an interior that blends modern digital features with nostalgic touches.

The electric model will be sold alongside the conventional Tiguan, which continues to offer petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains.

A Bolder Design With a Familiar Feel

One of the biggest changes is the exterior design. Volkswagen has moved away from the soft, rounded styling of the ID.4 and ID.5 in favor of a more muscular SUV appearance.

The ID. Tiguan features stronger body lines, more sculpted surfaces and a confident stance that gives it the appearance of a vehicle from a higher segment.

Another important detail is the return of traditional pull style door handles, replacing the more unconventional solutions found on some electric vehicles.

The result is an electric SUV that feels more connected to the familiar Volkswagen design language while maintaining a modern appearance.

Real Buttons Make a Comeback

Volkswagen has listened to customer feedback about the heavy reliance on touch controls in its earlier electric models.

The ID. Tiguan introduces physical buttons on the steering wheel, dedicated climate controls on the center console and a convenient controller for audio volume and track selection.

These changes are designed to make everyday functions easier to operate without navigating multiple touchscreen menus.

The cabin also benefits from improved materials and a more refined layout, reflecting the brands effort to deliver a more premium experience.

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is scheduled to launch in European markets in early 2027, with German and European preorders beginning in October 2026.

More importantly, the new model represents a shift in Volkswagen electric vehicle strategy. Instead of prioritizing futuristic controls and unconventional styling, the company is focusing on familiar design, everyday practicality and technology that feels easier to use.

With up to 600 km of driving range, three powertrain choices and a more traditional SUV personality, the ID. Tiguan could become one of the most appealing electric models in the Volkswagen lineup.

For drivers who appreciate the practicality of the Tiguan but want to move into electric mobility, the ID. Tiguan promises to bring together the best of both worlds.

Three Electric Powertrains and Up to 600 KM of Range

Three Electric Powertrains and Up to 600 KM of Range

The ID. Tiguan will offer three electric configurations to suit different driving needs.

The entry level rear wheel drive version comes with a 58 kWh battery and produces approximately 188 hp. It also supports towing loads of up to 1,800 kg.

A more powerful rear wheel drive variant features a 77 kWh battery and approximately 282 hp, offering a driving range of up to 600 km under the WLTP testing cycle.

At the top of the lineup, the 4MOTION all wheel drive model combines two electric motors to produce approximately 295 hp. It uses the same 77 kWh battery and offers a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 kg.

Volkswagen is also introducing Vehicle to Load technology through its PowerSocket adapter, allowing owners to power external electrical equipment using the vehicle battery.

The new cabin features a redesigned digital dashboard with a 10 inch driver display and a large 15 inch central infotainment touchscreen.

An optional 12 inch passenger display adds another layer of entertainment and connectivity, allowing the front passenger to access information, media and gaming features.

However, one of the most interesting additions is the new Retro display mode.

Drivers can switch the digital instrument cluster to a design inspired by the fourth generation Volkswagen Golf, complete with its distinctive blue and red instrument graphics.

The central touchscreen also offers a virtual garage featuring six classic Volkswagen models, creating a nostalgic connection to the brands automotive heritage.

The ID. Tiguan introduces standard one pedal driving, allowing drivers to slow the vehicle significantly by releasing the accelerator.

The available Connected Travel Assist system can support assisted lane changes on highways and recognize traffic lights, including bringing the vehicle to a stop at red signals under suitable conditions.

Optional comfort equipment includes electrically adjustable front seats with massage and ventilation functions, a panoramic sunroof and a 480 watt Harman Kardon sound system.

Practicality is also part of the package, with seating for five passengers, a 534 litre luggage compartment and an additional 32 litre storage area beneath the front hood.
