Nissan GT R Could Return With Hybrid Power by 2030

03 Apr 2026
  • When could the next Nissan GT R finally arrive?

Nissan appears to be laying the groundwork for the return of the GT R, with early development pointing toward a new generation that could arrive before 2030. While the current R35 has already secured its place as one of the most iconic performance cars of its era, the next chapter looks set to bring a more advanced formula that fits modern expectations. Instead of walking away from the GT R identity, Nissan seems ready to evolve it with more technology, more efficiency, and the kind of performance that can keep Godzilla relevant in a world that has changed dramatically.

Future Timing

Nissan is reportedly still in the early stages of shaping the next GT R, but the timeline already gives fans something real to look forward to. According to comments tied to the brand’s planning leadership in North America, more concrete news could start to surface around 2028, with the actual production car expected to show up before 2030. That gives Nissan time to carefully rethink what the GT R needs to become, especially since this is not just about replacing the R35 with a slightly newer version. It is about creating a new flagship performance car that can still wear the GT R badge with credibility in a very different era of emissions rules, electrification, and higher performance expectations across the global market.

One of the most interesting details is that Nissan may not completely abandon the V38 engine. Instead, the company could keep the familiar twin turbo V6 at the heart of the car, while heavily updating it and pairing it with hybrid assistance. That approach would allow Nissan to preserve some of the GT R’s traditional character while bringing the car up to the emissions and efficiency standards required for global sales. It also makes sense from a performance standpoint, because hybrid systems now play a huge role in delivering instant response, stronger acceleration, and more intelligent power delivery. For a car like the GT R, that opens the door to sharper torque vectoring, even more explosive launches, and a bigger leap in capability than a simple engine revision could offer. The old formula was already brilliant, but the new one may need a deeper transformation to compete with the latest generation of exotic performance machines.
