The defining feature of Phantom Hummingbird is the first use of abalone shell marquetry in Rolls Royce history.

Abalone was selected for its natural iridescence. Its inner surface produces changing blue and green tones as light moves across it, creating an effect that reflects the shimmering appearance of hummingbird feathers.

Rolls Royce combines the abalone with mother of pearl to recreate these colors inside the cabin. The result changes depending on the viewing angle and surrounding light, adding another dimension to the craftsmanship.

The hummingbird itself was selected as a symbol of joy, resilience and finding beauty in every moment.

Each Picnic Table features a hummingbird in flight constructed from 53 individual pieces of abalone shell and mother of pearl. The wings alone contain 18 separate pieces.

Between the two rear seats, the Rear Waterfall panel features an elaborate botanical composition containing another 84 individual pieces.

Creating these details presented Rolls Royce craftspeople with an unusual challenge. Abalone shell is extremely fine and brittle, requiring the team to develop new techniques specifically for the commission.

Development took more than nine months and required six iterations before the team established a suitable process.

Each piece of abalone shell and mother of pearl is initially laser cut 0.06 mm larger than its required final dimensions.

Craftspeople then file every fragment by hand until it reaches its precise shape. The edges must meet neighboring pieces without leaving visible seams, particularly around the complicated shapes forming the hummingbird wings.

The shell and pearl also have to be reduced in thickness before being carefully positioned within the veneer and protected with lacquer.

Once the individual pieces had been prepared and fitted, completing each Picnic Table and the Rear Waterfall panel required another eight hours of work. Rolls Royce says the three finished panels required a total of 45 hours.

The rest of the cabin was carefully designed around the colors and textures of the abalone marquetry.

Ash Burr veneer provides the background for all three decorative panels, while Silver Birch forms part of the Picnic Table compositions. The Silver Birch was cut from a single carefully selected log to ensure that its natural grain complemented the artwork.

Creme Light leather covers the seats, accompanied by Moccasin and Tan detailing. Seashell carpets complete the lower cabin, while the signature Rolls Royce Starlight Headliner creates the atmosphere above.

The combination allows the intricate hummingbird artwork to remain the visual centerpiece without separating it from the wider cabin design.

The natural theme extends beyond the interior through a distinctive two tone exterior.

Wildberry covers the lower body while White Sands finishes the upper section. A hand applied White Sands Coachline separates the two colors along the length of the Phantom Extended.

The final detail is a hand painted hummingbird incorporated into the Coachline, creating a subtle connection between the exterior and the elaborate artwork hidden inside the cabin.

Unlike a conventional special edition, Phantom Hummingbird was created specifically for an individual client as a tribute to his wife.
